S0 To what degree Janes' recollections of these years involved a telescoping of later tragic deaths, including those of his sister Martha in 1854 and his mysterious first wife, Nellie, in the mid-1860s, is difficult to determine. As is the case with most adults, Janes could not free himself from the tendency to confuse time sequences and to read into portions of his childhood events that, though emotionally running in similar channels, were separated by considerable gaps in time.

Two years later, in 1834, the family was more fortunate with the birth of a son, William Warner, who lived to maturity. There may also have been problems with William, however, for he is rarely mentioned in the family records, a curious silence that runs counter to the normal expectations for the eldest son in a property-conscious family. The birth of Leroy Lansing in 1837 therefore represented the fourth child, but only the second to survive.
