It affects the behavior of charged objects in the vicinity of. Hans Christian Oersted (1777–1851) suggests that experiments on galvanism could show the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Because the electron has such a small charge, the coulomb (abbreviated with a capital C) is often used as unit of charge for 6.24 × 1018 electrons. This pure electric field will not carry very far. This was demonstrated by Alessandro Volta in 1800, and the current was soon afterwards discovered to decompose water by electrolysis, and to heat fine wires. Within the range of their influence, the electromagnetic fields may affect physical objects, including living organisms.

Note that electrons actually flow from negative to positive, as shown in the figure, although we normally think of current flowing in the other direction. The Ca2+/Calmodulin-dependent myosin phosphorylation system—which makes muscles work better and relax better—has been extensively studied with both static and pulsed magnetic fields. By Lenz�s law, the current swirls in such a way as to create a magnetic field opposing the change; to do this in a conductor, electrons swirl in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Heinrich Hertz in Germany, soon afterwards, produced such waves by electrical means, in the first laboratory demonstration of radio waves. In years past this has been a very expensive form of therapy using sophisticated equipment, but that has all changed.
