Generally the earlier the era and/or the more non-western the culture dealt with, the more likely this is. Both authors employ elements of magical realism such as fantasy and the admission of multiple "valid" realities in the process of deconstruction. Outlook: Looks like it's trying for a Fifth Element feel. But they do believe that there is more to Latin American literature than the mythologizing view of the Magic Realist texts. While we're at it, is it really true that it was Uslar Pietri who first applied the term to literature?
