Grant at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, ending the Civil War. A group of whom presented a letter of protest to the Confederate General William G Webb in Jan 1863. By 1864, several influential companies started complaining that they were being “stuck” with large numbers of these private tokens, unable to redeem them for cash from the issuing merchants. Georgia's agricultural output was critical to the Confederate war effort, and because Georgia was a transportation and industrial center for the Confederacy, both sides struggled for control of the state.

He was wounded at Chickamauga, GA on September 19, 1863 and wounded again at Dallas, GA on May 29, 1864. Bourne depicts the British predicament as their “defenceless” position in Canada, even with the help of the 10,000 additional regular infantry which Palmerston deployed in response to the crisis. (Bourne 211) A recurrent British fear was that their soldiers would desert to the American side, urged on by “crimps.” (Bourne 217).

The Republican Party had taken a stand on the slavery issue and made the non-extension of slavery one of the planks in its platform during the presidential election of 1860. Confederate Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole troops had been organized by this time but arrived too late for the battle. There was a real but inadequate constituency for crushing the Southern establishment after the Civil War, and reintegrating the country under an entirely different paradigm.
