He is the just totalitarian potentate of everything, and is subject to nothing and nobody. Right at the beginning of Matthew's Gospel, before Jesus has been born, we are told: All this took place to fulfil what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means, "God is with us." It is probably better pronounced as YAHWEH. While the fact of Jesus' divinity, humanity, and uniqueness in combining the two natures since the incarnation may be relatively easier to understand now that He has been glorified (see for example the description of Him as He appeared to John at Revelation 1:12-20), it remains to discuss what scripture has to say about the manner in which these two natures coexisted during His first advent. James Denney�s work on the atonement offered similar criticisms of shallow liberal accounts of human sin.
